Thoracic surgery, also known as thoracic surgery or thoracotomy, is a surgical procedure performed to treat disease and injuries of the chest. It can also be used to gain access to an organ in the chest cavity that cannot be reached through other methods. Thoracic surgery is generally undertaken by a thoracic surgeon like Dr. Jon Kiev, who has completed special training in cardiothoracic surgery.

Relieving Chest Pain

Chest pain is a common symptom of many health conditions, including heart disease and lung disease. Chest pain can also be caused by cancer or other serious illnesses. If you have chest pain that does not go away after resting for a few days, contact your doctor right away to get medical attention.

Thoracic surgery is sometimes used as an option for treating chest pain caused by conditions such as pulmonary hypertension, where the high blood pressure in the lungs’ arteries (pulmonary arteries) hinders blood flow through them. This condition may eventually lead to shortness of breath and heart failure if left untreated.

Other than that, cardiothoracic surgeons can also treat congenital coronary artery anomalies, or birth defects involving abnormal connections between arteries and veins inside the heart muscle itself. These types of health anomalies cause sudden cardiac arrest in some people.

Treating Lung Diseases

Thoracic surgery can be used to treat a number of lung diseases. The first one is pulmonary fibrosis, which is a condition that causes scarring in the lungs and makes it difficult for them to function properly.

These surgeons can also treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), which is another type of chronic disease that damages the lungs’ tissues. It’s also known as non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP). This can lead to irreversible damage if left untreated; however, thoracic surgery has been shown to help improve symptoms and extend life expectancy in some cases.

And lastly, these surgeons can treat tuberculosis, which is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and can be treated with surgery if there are complications such as collapsed or diseased lung tissue due to TB or other diseases like cancerous tumors growing on them.

Removing Tumors

Lastly, tumors in the chest can be removed through surgery. The procedure is called thoracotomy, and it involves making an incision in the chest to remove a tumor or other tissue from inside your body. This type of surgery is often necessary when cancer cells are too close to important organs or blood vessels for doctors to safely remove them through other methods.

When removing tumors through a thoracotomy incision (also called “open heart surgery”), doctors will make an incision either along one side of your breastbone (sternum) or down both sides at once–this depends on where exactly they need access to get at your rib cage and lungs so they can access any suspicious areas within them.Once inside, surgeons like Dr. Jon Kiev use tools such as retractors and clamps as well as surgical instruments like scissors or lasers (if needed) to carefully remove everything that needs removing while leaving healthy tissue untouched so it doesn’t become damaged during the removal process itself!
